breakfast : zmorge : desayuno : petit déjeuner

There was a time in my life - high school, college, grad school - when I didn't give breakfast a thought, not even a little one, not even a piece of toast with butter one. I am a night owl, inherited from my mom, which means it is impossible for me to get out of bed at an early-bird hour. I am queen of the snooze button. I can convince myself of anything when I'm still horizontal; that it will only take me ten minutes to shower and get out the door, that it is totally okay to go to work with wet hair, that I don't need to iron my shirt, that that homework I saved for the morning can be saved for the five minutes before class. Breakfast was never even on the let-me-sleep-longer list. It was thrown out before I even hit snooze the first time.

Now that I have the time to be a night owl and a breakfast person I am totally in love with this early morning meal. I look forward to lingering over a warm bowl of oatmeal or an omelet with a book and my journal. When I don't sit and eat breakfast I feel out of sorts, like today, when I snoozed until the last minute before running to catch the train to work. Did I mention I have a (very) part time job? Maybe not. I'm an accountant for a little start-up here in Zürich. It's not my passion and it doesn't fill that empty what-to-do-with-my-life pit, but it's a good way to make a little money and keep my mind ticking. Anyway, enough about work and more about breakfast. I am already excited for breakfast tomorrow, and with my night owl tendencies in full effect tonight it's not that far off!

...here are some favorite breakfast shots...

If you are looking for some other musings on breakfast, or perhaps a mean french toast recipe check out this post.

are you a breakfast person? If so, what do you eat? Always the same thing or do you mix it up? I'm curious...

  1. Mmm, I love breakfast - and yours are so delicious! I am completely a breakfast person. If I don't eat it I die :) But I tend to eat in phases: toast for weeks, smoothies for weeks. Last fall I was in an oat bran phase that lasted for months....

    1. I'm the same! I find something and stick with it for weeks. It's funny that we do that with breakfast, but not really with lunch or dinner. Oat bran huh? Sounds delicious right now actually.

    1. Thanks Hilary! Love those bowls. I actually bought them at that shop in New Haven called Metaphore. I love everything they make (obviously). We have great wine glasses, short and stemmed, from them and I just bought a few blue Taika mugs. Love! Thanks for commenting!

  3. I am totally a breakfast person. My breakfasts don't tend to be very elaborate--usually just toast if I've baked some bread recently, and if not, then oatmeal or cereal depending on the season. If there's leftover brioche around, I can usually convince Octavian to make French toast. Every now and then I crave pancakes, but I actually hate making them, unless I'm alone and cam just eat them hot from the pan. Even put in the oven to keep warm, they're never quite right. Pancakes made to order are the only way to eat them, in my opinion.

Love your collection of breakfast shots. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Pancakes are so tough! I think you're right. Pancakes for one, or two, or to order are the best way to do it. I love the sound of your breakfast. There is something so perfect about toast, especially when it's from bread that you've baked. I'm in a serious peanut butter and jelly on toast for breakfast place right now. Toast is one of the best foods. Just ate avocado on toast for lunch. Yum! I use to eat cereal when I was younger, but I don't think I've had cereal in ages, mostly because I've fallen in love with oatmeal. Thanks for filling me in on your breakfast routine!

  5. You used to not eat breakfast?!?! I have spent most of my life puzzled by you type of people (and yes, you are a people). Breakfast is my favorite part of the day, whether it's early or late, healthy or indulgent. I need breakfast, and always have. I'm glad you've converted over. Especially because it has led you to take some pretty beautiful shots of breakfast -- I love every single one of these. And that's ironic, I was just looking at your buttermilk french toast recipe yesterday. Think I might have a go at it this weekend for a lazy morning treat.

And that's awesome about your (part-time) job! I may just be square, but working as an account sounds really fun. I hope it leads to new things for you.

    1. I'm a people huh? I can't imagine I keep very good company as a person who doesn't eat breakfast. I much prefer breakfast eaters these days :) I'm so glad you like these photos, it was fun to go back through my photo library and collect them from different albums. Did you try the french toast? If so I hope you liked it.

  6. I love breakfast. It's my favorite thing to do in the States -- go out for a nice big breakfast with friends.

I noticed that you have not succumbed to a Nespresso machine. A friend moving back to the U.S. gave me hers, and it has changed my life ;-)

    Congrats on the part/time job.

    1. Susan! Brunch with friends on a Sunday afternoon is one of my favorite things. It was interesting being in Berlin because Sunday brunch is HUGE there, it is what you do on a Sunday. I hope those long lingering weekend meals make their way to Switzerland sooner rather than later. Have you been to Fork & Bottle - they have a great Sunday brunch with eggs benedict and all.

We actually do have a Nespresso machine - a wonderful wedding gift from a couple of my friends. We use the nespresso during the week, when we are short on time, but on the weekends we like the slow thoughtful process of the Chemex. And the coffee is more of an American style, not quiet so strong.

We should have coffee one day. You offered a little while ago and I'm sorry I'm just getting back to you now on your nice offer - I'd love to meet you!

  7. Talley, the photographs in this post are wonderful. I just returned to scroll through them a second time. Very impressed by the masterful exposure in the first and last shots.

Yes, yes, I am absolutely a breakfast person! My go-to is anything oaty: hot oatmeal, granola, toast made from a bread I bake that has chopped oats mixed in. And always a cup of tea.

    1. some might call it masterful others might just call it luck ;)

I love oats too! I tend to be a warm breakfast person these days so I've been eating a ton of oatmeal, but bread with oats mixed in sounds amazing. And yes tea, I'm a tea girl too. I love the big mugs, the fragrant smell and the warm feeling that lingers in my stomach for hours afterwards. This makes me want some tea...off to make some.

  8. I love eating breakfast. When I'm at school, its usually a bowl of cereal or oatmeal or a hard boiled egg I got from the cafeteria the night before. But when I'm at home with access to a kitchen, I love making eggs, pancakes, and waffles. I love breakfast.

    1. waffles! I've been thinking about getting a waffle maker for what feels like ages. Christmas is coming though so I might just have the little elves bring me a belgian waffle maker.

  9. I am a really breakfast person. In daily life I eat spelled buns with jam, quark and some fruit. But at least once a week I try to vary and to try something new..enjoy your weekend! s.*

  10. Quark - the illusive German dairy product that lies somewhere between yogurt and cheese. I think on the label it says it is cheese right? I find it to be almost identical to Greek yogurt. I'm definitely going to miss it when we move back to the states. And bread with jam is one of my favorite foods, so simple and delicious.

  13. Oh, I would like to eat all of your breakfasts! I remember in college when I thought a "healthy" breakfast was a bagel - half with cream cheese and half with jam. Right. Lovely photos as usual, Talley! Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve at Thanksgiving.
